Thrupp Lake

Thrupp Lake

Date of Adventure: 7 Nov, 2023

A former gravel pit, Thrupp Lake has been transformed into a wildlife safe haven for many protected species – including otters.

Follow the clearly signposted circular route, at 1.7km it’s perfect for a stroll with little ones, and enjoy taking in the sights and sounds of nature. There is lots to stop and look at along the route too, you might spy a few fairy doors, plus there are trees to climb and stumps to leap off. The boardwalk and bridge offer good vantage points to gaze out over the water and take in the seasonal delights: damselflies and dragonflies in the summer, spectacular colours in autumn and a multitude of overwintering wetland birds in winter.

Lots of perfect picnic stops with nature kindly providing a comfy seat or two. Make sure to bring the wellies if it’s been raining as the puddles will plentiful and muddy, and don’t forget a flask of hot chocolate for the perfect pit stop.

Know?

Tracey Emin’s first British exhibition since 1997 was at Modern Art Oxford in 2002 and drew together the artist's now iconic neon wall hangings, drawings, etchings, film works, and a large scale sculpture installation of a pier and shack made from reclaimed timber.
