A very moving tribute to soldiers killed in the D-Day landing on the 17th June 1944.
The installation consists of 1475 silhouettes of military personnel and the sheer scale of it is so powerful. It sits in the Grecian Valley, just over a mile from Stowe’s entrance, this means that you view the sweeping art installation from up high, allowing you to see them all at once. It’s beautiful, heartbreaking, profound and moving all at the same time. Pictures don’t really do it justice, there is a feeling here that’s hard to explain.
Overlooking the valley are information boards with letters written from soldiers to loved ones. Reading heart wrenching letters whilst overlooking the valley humanises and brings to life the the soldiers in front of you. Deeply moving; I shed a few tears and saw others doing the same.
Wander amongst the installation, view from up high and read the personal stories that connects each one of us with these soldiers and their sacrifice.
If you have one of the National Trust Autumn free entry vouchers then this can be used for entry to Stowe up until Friday 18th October.
