Top 5 countryside walks

Sep 24, 2023

Walking is a big love of ours and over the years we have covered quite some distances. Sometimes long, sometimes short and sometimes completely lost! We use walking as an opportunity not just to connect with nature but also each other too. Click on the titles for more info on the walks we know, love and return to often:

Chequers Valley Family Walk

It’s hard to believe that this is only 20 minutes away from Oxford as the views are out of this world. It’s circular and at 4.5km is doable for confident walkers. Expect to some series wildlife in the mixed woodland and open farmland you’ll pass through.

Blenheim Park – Combe Gate

Blenheim, but not as you know it. There are numerous free gates that will give you access to Blenheim Park, and this one is our favourite with countryside views aplenty. It’s also a good option if you fancy a walk in the wild but little legs aren’t quite up to it. Children’s scooters and bikes are welcome here and will glide along tarmacked paths seamlessly.

Swyncombe Circular

Although we file this walk under ‘snowdrops’, it’s one that we do regularly throughout the year. Good for when the legs aren’t up to a long walk, this 3km circular is within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Beauty and it certainly lives up to this; the route itself passes along the Ridgeway National Trail, through fields, woodland and across the Swyncombe Estate with its sloping views of the Chilterns below.

White Horse Hill

It’s quite something standing atop of White Horse Hill as the wind pummels you…exhilarating and maybe a tiny bit scary too! If you have dare devils then watch them jump from the hills; if you would rather keep your head on your shoulders then watch as you amble along the lower ridges!

Shotover Park

Not to be confused with Shotover Country Park, which is just up the road. The walk up the tree-lined avenue is worth the trip alone as you drift from path to track. You’ll feel the history seeping out of every branch as you re-trace the steps of high society and royalty from yesteryear.

Know?

Tracey Emin’s first British exhibition since 1997 was at Modern Art Oxford in 2002 and drew together the artist's now iconic neon wall hangings, drawings, etchings, film works, and a large scale sculpture installation of a pier and shack made from reclaimed timber.
