Bagley Wood

Bagley Wood

Date of Adventure: 22 Oct, 2023

Aren’t we spoilt for woodland walks in Oxford and beyond? So many on our doorstep to choose from. It may come as no surprise find out that Oxford was, from the earliest historical days, one of the best-wooded shires in England.

This ancient wood is one of the largest in Oxford so don’t get lost! The 550 acres include natural oak and coppiced woodland, plantations, experimental plots, and specimen trees. Expect carpets of bluebells in April and May and wide ranging views of Abingdon and the Chilterns depending on what route you follow. We find lots of walking routes on the free AllTrails site, especially longer ones for the Big Oxplorers only. Remember to wear wellies on your jaunt if it has been raining as it gets very muddy.

As you can see from our pictures the varying landscapes are beautiful and the tall, tall trees can make little ones look teeny tiny!

We access the woods via Kennington Bike Track but there are multiple entrances including via Oxford Rd.

Know?

The Oxford Canal starts at Hythe Bridge, just a few minutes from the city centre and railway station. Built over 200 years ago, dug by hand, it flows north out of the city, through Banbury, and all the way to Coventry.
