Victoria Arms and Marston Hamm walk

Victoria Arms and Marston Hamm walk

Date of Adventure: 4 May, 2023

A glorious summer’s day walk! It has elements of everything we love in life: walking, wildflowers, riverside and a gorgeous pub garden. And if you are really organised, you might throw in some punting too.

The circular walk starts and ends at The Victoria Arms in Old Marston. Do make sure you stop for a coffee, lunch or tipple there – the beautiful setting is picture perfect on a sunny day.

The walk is on the Oxford Preservation Trust website, a gem full of local walking inspiration. It’s short, passes through fields of wildflowers and jungle footpaths (wear long sleeves and legs to evade the stingers) and follows the river for parts of it. There’s lots to see and hear along the way: butterflies fluttering in the breeze, grasshoppers chirping, thousands of buttercups, birds, insects and so much more! Aside from all of that, walking in a meadow on a sunny day is just utterly joyful.

Return starving to the The Victoria Arms and find a spot overlooking the river. This is also a super popular pit stop for punters, SUPers and kayakers and you will find a steady stream of them arriving and departing from the bank. Lunch is an easy affair with a simple children’s menu and the food  is out really quickly.

Save this one for sunny fun and bring it out with the nice weather – this is a walk that deserves to be walked and a pub garden that deserves to be sat in!

Did you

Know?

Oxford Preservation Trust bought the Victoria Arms pub in 1959 to save the nearly derelict building. Now fully renovated, this rural gem re-opened in 1984. It's still standing proud and serving Oxford’s pub-goers every day!
