Do not visit Oxford without visiting this place! Utterly brilliant and captivating!
From a gigantic Japanese spider crab (our favourite!) to meteorites as old as the solar system, HUGE skeletons to beautiful gemstones – this award-winning museum has it all in spades! And if you think you are going to come here without getting you hands on some of these exhibits then you are very wrong! Little hands are encouraged to touch and explore exhibits at their height, eyes are invited to peer into tiny little portholes to peep into and very clear signs encourage exploration.
The Main Court is now home to twenty brand new exhibits housed in state-of-the-art showcases and new exhibits will continue to be rolled out until Spring 2024. It’s kind of mind boggling to think of the work that goes into this – so many years in the making! The museum was established in 1860 to draw together scientific studies from across the University of Oxford. Today, it continues to be a place of scientific research, collecting and fieldwork, and plays host to a programme of events, exhibitions and activities for the public and school students of all ages. The museum holds 7 million objects and has 750,000 visitors a year – be one of them.
